English Courses

Cancelling Courses

The registration fee is non-refundable under any circumstance.

Before arrival in the UK

EU students

We MUST have the cancellation in writing two weeks prior to the start of the course. We will refund all fees minus the registration fee of £50.00. If we receive less than two weeks notice that you cannot start the course the registration fee and £100 cancellation fee will be retained from the fees paid.

Non-EU students

NO refund of course fees can be made once leave to enter the UK has been granted. We strongly advise students to take out insurance to cover course cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances. Please contact us for more information about international students insurance (this covers course cancellation fees and is priced reasonably).

If you wish to cancel your course before you apply for a visa please inform us immediately in writing. The refund process may be delayed while we seek confirmation from immigration that you have not applied for a visa. We will retain £100 cancellation fee plus the non-refundable registration fee of £50.00. In this situation, your CAS will be withdrawn immediately and we will contact the relevant embassy or high commission to advise them that your course has been cancelled. Any visa applications would be automatically refused in this situation.

After arrival in the UK

You cannot cancel or postpone your course once it has started.

Students may apply, in writing, for a credit for the unused part of their course. Future credit may be authorised depending on the individual circumstances, but is in no way guaranteed. If authorised, this may be used within a two year period, subject to availability. Credit cannot be passed to third parties and can only be used for general English courses. Credit is calculated according to course fees paid, not weeks booked. Students who choose to shorten their courses will lose the weeks not taken. You would also need to apply for entry clearance.

Visa refusals

Manchester International College will retain £100 of the course fees plus the registration fee (total £150.00) if leave to enter the UK is refused. However we must receive notification of refusal BEFORE the course start date. Refund applications must be made no later than three months after the date of the refusal. Refunds are not made while appeals are in progress.

Please note that before granting a refund we must receive the following documents:

    • Completed Refund Application form.
    • Notification of Refusal of Entry Clearance from the UKBA. (scan all pages and send to us)
    • Letter issued for visa application (CAS statement, Student Visitor Visa Letter)

Please note it is the responsibility of the student to provide the necessary documentation to support a refund. Delays to the refund process are likely if we are obliged to seek verification of visa status directly from the embassy concerned.

No refunds will be made if:

    • The student's leave has been curtailed by the UKBA for breaking the rules of the student visa
    • The student leaves the UK without permission from the school and is refused re-entry.
    • The student uses fraudulent documentation in their visa application.

Good attendance is important for a number of reasons:

    1. It may be a requirement of your visa
    2. It means you will follow the class and you will be able to achieve your language goals.
    3. Progress can only be made through a commitment to your studies.
    4. You will benefit from the guidance of our teachers and you can make new friends!

If you are on a student visa, you are obliged and required to attend your classes on a full-time basis. Should you fail to meet attendance requirements, you may be reported to the UKBA.

You MUST have an attendance rate of at least 80%.

If your attendance is below this, your course may be cancelled and the UKBA informed.

Remember, if you have a Tier 4 General Student Visa, you cannot miss 10 contacts in a row. If you are not subject to immigration control (EU national) you should try to attend your classes regularly to get the full benefit of your course. If you miss classes, you will not be able to catch up, and we will not offer additional classes. If you have problems attending, you should speak to your teacher or the Director of Studies who will advise you on how to get the most out of your course.

Remember, your progress and achievement is a measure of how well you have attended and we always recommend that you take an active role in your learning. If you need more help, or to discuss a personal learning plan, speak to the Director of Studies or your teacher.
