Our International Foundation Year – Business Pathway is the perfect introduction to studying in the UK. We will guide you from the moment you arrive in Manchester and prepare you to enter year 1 in a UK university.

The programme combines General English lessons with lectures and seminars in 5 different disciplines.  On successful completion of the course, you will receive the International Foundation Year certificate awarded by NCC Education (UK NQF Level 3) and best of all, you will be ready to start university!

Course Description

To complete the qualification you must study and pass eight units.


The course consists of the following six core units:


  • Developing English Language Skills - develops your English language skills to be able to communicate effectively beyond simple everyday contexts. It aims to improve allfour skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking and enables you to acquire a broad range of knowledge which you can use to confidently and effectively communicate in English. The unit guides you through Intermediate and then Upper Intermediate levels of English language study.
  • Advanced English Language Skills - enables you to put into practice the language you have acquired and develop into an advanced user of English. You will make extensive use of the four skills of speaking, reading, listening and writing, as well as extending your knowledge of complex grammar and advanced vocabulary.
  • English for Academic Purposes - develops your understanding and use of the key linguistic skills necessary to engage effectively in an academic environment where you are being taught in English.  
  • Study and Communication Skills - equips you with the essential study skills needed to succeed at university level. You will learn the basic skills necessary to conduct independent research, write academic papers, give formal oral presentations and apply what has been taught during lectures to your studies.
  • Culture Studies - enables you to gain awareness and increased understanding of other cultures. You will learn about various features of a foreign country and its culture,with a particular focus on student life and studying abroad.
  • Foundation Mathematics - builds upon your existing knowledge in the areas of mathematics whilst introducing new topics appropriate across a range of academic disciplines and for your future career.


A further two units must be taken to prepare for a business degree at university:


  • Introduction to Business - provides you with an introduction to the purpose, types and organisation of businesses. You will also become familiar with a range of business concepts such as basic marketing practices.
  • Introduction to Accounting and Economics - introduces you to the key principles of accounting and economics. You will become accustomed to concepts such as market structures and monetary policy and also learn how to produce simple financial statements.


Students will also follow an IELTS preparation course as part of their English Language studies in the final term.


As part of the IFY programme, you will study English language at three stages - Intermediate (CEFR B1) in Term 1, Upper-Intermediate (CEFR B2) and English for Academic Purposes in Term 2 and Advanced (CEFR C1) plus IELTS Preparation in Term 3.


In Term 2 and Term 3, students attend lectures, seminars and practical workshops in 5 different disciplines (3 core modules and 2 electives).


Our syllabus combines communicative classroom-based lessons, modern technology and exam training and techniques to prepare students for the NCC exams at the end of each English module.


You will also be expected to do at least 12 hours of self-study per week.


This course is assessed by examination and assignments.


Average class size 10-12 (maximum 15 students, minimum 5 students).

January Fast Track entry: IELTS 5.5 minimum


Minimum age 16/17.

Visa Advice International students from outside the EU/EAA will need a Tier 4 (General) student visa.
Additional Costs

All Course Materials are included in the course fees. However, students will be expected to provide stationery and files for their personal use.


Manchester Airport Pick-Up Service: £50 one way or £100 return.


Registration Fee: £50 for Overseas Non-EU nationals, £30 for Overseas EU nationals and £20 for 'Local' students.


Express Courier Delivery Charge: £20.
